A tight jaw. Clenching without realising. A feeling of tension that travels into the neck, shoulders or temples.
Jaw tension is one of the most common concerns Rebecca Pearson, Manual Facialist at DAMU, encounters. Yet often, we don’t realise quite how much we are holding until we experience what it feels like to let go.
We asked Rebecca why the jaw can become such a focal point for tension — and why finding release may begin by looking beyond the jaw itself.
Our jaw is rarely still. We speak, eat, express and, sometimes without knowing it, clench or grind.
Long days behind a screen, changes in posture and movement, and periods of stress can all influence how we carry tension through the face, neck and shoulders. And while we may feel it most in the jaw, the story often begins elsewhere.
As Rebecca explains:
“The body is interconnected. If the neck and shoulders are tight, posture has changed, or the body is carrying stress, simply working on the jaw in isolation may not address the bigger picture.”
It was Rebecca’s own experience with persistent jaw tension that led her to explore this connection more deeply. Today, her approach looks beyond the point of tension itself, considering the face, neck and shoulders alongside posture, movement and the rhythms of everyday life.
Our bodies have their own ways of telling us when something needs attention.
During periods of stress or deep concentration, we may instinctively tighten the muscles of the face or clench our teeth. Often, it happens quietly — until the jaw begins to feel tired, restricted or uncomfortable.
For Rebecca, this is why every ritual begins with a conversation.
“Everyone is different. I like to understand what may be contributing to the tension before we begin.”
There is no one-size-fits-all approach to release. Instead, the ritual begins with understanding where tension is held, how the surrounding areas feel and what the body may be asking for in that moment.
Rebecca’s Jaw Release at DAMU is a 60-minute manual facial ritual dedicated to creating space through the jaw and surrounding areas.
Combining targeted manual techniques with intraoral buccal work, Rebecca works both externally and inside the mouth to reach the deeper facial muscles and encourage a sense of release.
It can be surprising just how different the jaw feels afterwards — softer, more open, with a greater sense of space through the mouth and lower face. The manual work can also leave the facial contours appearing naturally more sculpted and refreshed.
Sometimes, the place asking for release is only one part of the story.
Rebecca joins us every Tuesday at DAMU, our wellness sanctuary within The Mandrake in Fitzrovia, with three specialised manual rituals.
Jaw Release — 60 minutes | £190
A focused ritual for tension held through the jaw and surrounding areas, combining considered manual techniques with intraoral buccal work.
Sculpt & Lift — 90 minutes | £290
A restorative, sculpting facial ritual created to lift, define and revive — particularly suited to the moments when you want to look and feel renewed.
Deep Lymphatic — 75 / 90 minutes | £190 / £210
A rhythmic, deeply restorative ritual supporting lymphatic flow, designed to leave the face and body feeling lighter and refreshed.
Each begins in the same place: understanding what you need in that moment.
